Vigo County

Indiana State University (ISU) has developed a plan to increase capacity for early childhood education through the renovation of the Chestnut Building while creating a co-design model that positions Vigo County as national leaders in early childhood education. The ISU Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC), an affiliate of the Bayh College of Education, provides high quality childcare services, teaching and training for children from 6 weeks through 5 years of age.

The ECEC expansion will fuel economic development, attract talent to the region, and provide the highest quality care. The new and improved ISU ECEC at the Chestnut Building would provide:

  • An educational laboratory to enhance the body of knowledge surrounding early childhood education.
  • Nearly double capacity, allowing for direct, full-time care for over 142 children daily.
  • Excellent, hands-on teacher preparation in early childhood education in a lab school setting.
  • A body of research, regarding teaching and child development, that will influence state, regional, and national practices(while elevating Indiana in thought leadership).
  • Positively influences state preschool standards and credentialing.
  • Increase the number of early childhood education options in the region.
