The Terre Haute Parks Department aims to re-design and overhaul Herz-Rose Park, and Art Spaces to provide a significant work of public art.
Based on community engagement events like the 2022 We Live Event residents are highly expressive of their need for interaction and communication as a feature to be addressed within the park. Numerous residents remember when many businesses in the neighborhood offered opportunities for social interaction and connection. The park and the public art piece create an opportunity to offer some of these aspects that are apparent in thriving neighborhoods.
The concept is based on the idea of a mailbox, serving as a receptacle for messages and a feature for outgoing communications. The artwork will also serve as a communication hub, providing links to resources and events throughout the city. The arches in the sculpture will be lined with cutout tracings of hands from people in the community, especially from local schools and youth centers.
