Happiness Bag Breaks Ground on Facility Expansion with Support from Vigo County ARPA Funds

Happiness Bag, a Terre Haute-based nonprofit dedicated to providing recreational and educational programs for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities, officially broke ground today on an exciting new facility expansion. The groundbreaking ceremony, held at the organization’s current location, marked a major step forward in Happiness Bag’s mission to serve the community by providing increased space and resources for its essential programs.

Terre Haute, IN – October 9, 2024 – Happiness Bag, a Terre Haute-based nonprofit dedicated to providing recreational and educational programs for individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities, officially broke ground today on an exciting new facility expansion. The groundbreaking ceremony, held at the organization’s current location, marked a major step forward in Happiness Bag’s mission to serve the community by providing increased space and resources for its essential programs.

The expansion project, made possible in part by the support of Vigo County’s allocation of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, will allow Happiness Bag to significantly increase its capacity to serve more individuals and provide more comprehensive services. Vigo County Commissioner Mike Morris spoke at the event, highlighting the $750,000 ARPA funding provided to support the project, emphasizing the importance of investing in organizations like Happiness Bag that directly impact the quality of life for residents in the community.

"We are proud to support Happiness Bag through ARPA funds as part of our broader commitment to strengthening community services and enhancing opportunities for all Vigo County residents," said Commissioner Morris. "This project represents a critical investment in the well-being of individuals with disabilities and aligns with our goal to create a more inclusive, supportive community."

The ceremony featured remarks from Jodi Moan, Executive Director of Happiness Bag, and Trudy Rupska, the organization’s Board President. Jodi Moan expressed deep gratitude for the support received from the county and the broader community, noting how the expansion will directly impact the lives of the individuals Happiness Bag serves. Trudy Rupska thanked the many donors and supporters who contributed to the fundraising efforts, noting that while much has been achieved, continued community support will be essential as the project moves forward.

Michael Shaw, representing Earl C. Rodgers & Associates, the lead construction firm on the project, also spoke about the building plans and how the expanded facility will offer state-of-the-art amenities to further enhance the programming and opportunities available to Happiness Bag’s participants.

Following the speeches, the event culminated in an official groundbreaking ceremony. Attendees, including board members, stakeholders, and friends of Happiness Bag, took turns participating in this symbolic moment, celebrating the start of a new chapter for the organization.

This expansion project stands as a testament to what can be accomplished through strong community partnerships and targeted investments like ARPA funding. Vigo County remains committed to using ARPA funds to support local organizations and initiatives that promote a healthier, more inclusive future for all residents.
